Music

At Bourne Alliance, we are passionate about music and believe that a rich music curriculum will have lasting benefits throughout a child’s lifetime. As a result, we have ensured that music is an integral part of our school’s life through regular class music lessons, using Charanga Music in order to lay the foundations for learning the key knowledge and skills required at primary school.

We also provide a wide variety of musical exposure throughout the year through:

  • Assemblies
  • Concerts
  • Performances
  • Opportunities to learn how to play musical instruments within class teaching

Charanga is a mastery-based music curriculum which enables children to understand musical concepts through a repetition-based approach to learning which allows for a more secure, deeper learning of musical skills.

Children at our school are exposed to an integrated, practical, exploratory and child-led approach to musical learning. The interrelated dimensions of music weave through the topics to encourage the development of musical skills as the learning progresses through listening and appraising, differing musical activities (including creating and exploring) and performing.

Each music topic comprises the of strands of musical learning which correspond with the national curriculum for music:

  1. Listening and Appraising
  2. Musical Activities
    1. Warm-up Games
    2. Optional Flexible Games
    3. Singing
    4. Playing instruments
    5. Improvisation
    6. Composition
  3. Performing
